The Girl Scouts of Maine were honored Sunday by the Maine Army National Guard. Captain Jeff Whitten says it's for a sweet reason.
He tells us while his unit was in Afghanistan, several local Girl Scout troops sent them cookies-- nearly three thousand boxes of Girl Scout cookies in all.
Sunday in Bangor, Whitten thanked them for that gift, presenting the Girl Scouts with a mosaic of the American flag, and an actual flag that flew over their compound.
He says it's great to feel support from home while serving overseas. And, he says, the cookies themselves weren't bad either.
"Boxes came in and we took them around. It was kind of neat to see them because everybody had a smile on their face, and everybody's got a favorite, whether it's Thin Mints or Peanut Butter Cookies. And it really did brighten their day," says Cpt. Jeff Whitten.
"Many of our girls have family members, parents, brothers, sisters who are in the military and who are in Afghanistan. So it's a very small way but a wonderful way that we can touch lives back and forth," says Joan McDonald, Girl Scouts of Maine CEO.
The Girl Scouts on Sunday were also celebrating a move. In January their service center and shop relocated from to Bangor from Brewer. Several hundred girls came out to visit the new spot, at 359 Perry Road, and had fun with a variety of activities.
