Seven candidates threw their hats into the ring for Governor of Maine.

With 79% of the precincts reporting so far, Waterville mayor Paul LePage was declared the winner with 38% of the votes.

He had a little more than 36,000 votes.

LePage watched the returns Tuesday night in his hometown of Waterville.

The conservative is in his sixth year as the elm city's mayor.

LePage knows that the results of his convincing win are probably surprising to many around the state.

"We started this race and everybody said, he doesn't have a chance," said LePage. "It took a couple of months for them to even call me a dark horse."

LePage says he can bring fiscal responsibility to the table, something he says that's been missing in Augusta for years.

If elected, he says his top three priorities will be focused on education, welfare and taxes.

LePage has been general manager for Marden's stores across Maine since 1996.
