Meet Maliek…a young man who is waiting for his adoptive home!
Born in August 1997, Maliek is a very smart and energetic young man. He has an engaging personality and likes to make people laugh. Those who know Maliek best say he is quite funny.
Maliek attends public school and says he enjoys school. He receives special education services to help him stay on task and complete his work. He will do best in an adoptive home with that will continue to encourage and support him with his school work. Maliek says he is interested in learning about human science. He also says that his strengths in school are recess and downtime.
Maliek enjoys indoor and outdoor activities. He likes to play Pokémon and watch TV. He will choose to play video games while inside, specifically with his Game Boy and laptop. He will help out with chores around the house when asked. Maliek says he tries hard to keep his room clean. Maliek enjoys fishing and riding his bike.
Maliek wants people to know that he is caring and loving. Maliek is learning how to be more honest and says that this goal is an important part of his life. Maliek is also a good eater…he loves to eat!
The best family for Maliek is one with a lot of patience, nurturance, structure with clear limits, and acceptance. Maliek has moved a few times over the past two years and he says he "just want(s) to stay in one place for a while." Maliek says he wants a loving family that gives hugs and kisses. He wants them to be compassionate. Maliek would like a family with pets. A family with other children older than Maliek would be best for him. Maliek does have siblings that are important for him to keep close contact. Maliek says he would prefer a family that is African American. Yet, he is open to any family that can provide him with the link to his cultural background.
Someone to nurture and guide him, be there for his successes and his failures.
Someone to say "I love you."
That's what 12-year old Maliek wants in a family.
Joy Hollowell recently met up with the 7th grader at Between Friends Art Center in Brewer.
"I feel like I'm going to say, 'Hello America.'"
12-year old Maliek is Mr. Personality. The 7th grader loves talking to people and is quite mature for his age.
"So how is school going for you?"
"Ah, I've got my days."
Maliek says he really enjoys being creative, and that includes cooking.
"Two weeks ago, I cooked a cake for my mom, my foster mom."
"And it tasted good?
Yeah.
Chocolate cake?
Um, hm.
Can't go wrong with chocolate cake.
No you can't."
Maliek tells me he also likes to cook fish, especially the kind he's caught.
"The first fish I caught was a large-mouthed bass," says Maliek. "It was about that big, and we ate it, and it tasted delicious. That's when I first said, I love to fish."
Maliek would love a family that fishes, cooks, roller blades, plays boards games, bike rides, you get the picture. But most of all, Maliek would love a family to call his own.
"I think, it would change my life forever," says Maliek.
In what way?
"In the way that I wouldn't have to be moved around all the time anymore. And I can stay in one place for awhile. And I can call them mom or dad. And, I can have arguments with them, but then go back and say, I still love you anyways."
