The past seems to be haunting us again after we get through a period of unsettled weather. For the next few days, the state will be pounded with a potpourii of precipitation types. Ski country will receive a bounty of snow, interior regions will experience a mix of rain and snow, where coastal communities are going to get slammed with heavy winds, along with flooding due to high waves.
One of the reasons why this storm has been delayed compared to earlier thinking is due to a strong high pressure ridge that replaced the maritime low which wrapped in mild air. Gradually the high will weaken and move back across Greenland in order to set up a comparable pattern that we felt from late January through mid-February.
However, one of the differences with this set us is that the current strom will slowly move north towards the Canadian Maritimes. This in turn will keep the clouds overhead and the precipitation falling. Rain will eventually switch over to snow as the storm matures and moves back into the colder air.
Overall, very cloudy, wet and windy times are in the offing.
