Event Dates and Times

1/20/2018 - Starts: 1:00 PM - Ends: 4:00 PM
Bangor Public Library
Join the Bangor Public library for this exciting film. Ove (Rolf Lassgård) is the quintessential angry old man next door. An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, who spends his days enforcing block association rules that only he cares about, and visiting his wife's grave, Ove has given up on life. After a boisterous young family moves in next door and accidentally flattens Ove's mailbox, an unlikely friendship forms.
This is a foreign film with subtitles. A discussion will follow the film and be hosted by Bob Treadwell from Penobscot Valley Senior College.

Jesup Memorial Library, 34 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609
Join Maureen Giffin from the Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Palliative Care Program for the second program in the Age By Design series, on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m. Age By Design is a set of programs and community discussions that will explore various facets of life for those 50 and older on Mount Desert Island. Age By Design is a joint collaboration by the Jesup Memorial Library, Island Connections, the YWCA Mount Desert Island and the Mount Desert Island YMCA.
Giffin, a nurse practitioner, will share insights and information about the valuable role of palliative care for patients and families. Palliative care focuses on improving quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families through the prevention and relief of physical, social and spiritual aspects of suffering. It's provided by a team of doctors, nurses, social workers and other specialists who work with other doctors on both an inpatient and outpatient basis to provide specialized medical care.
The third Age By Design program is on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m. and will focus on exercise classes geared toward those 50 and older. The panelists for the program include: Cas Dowden, who teaches a class called Strong Women at the YWCA, which is designed to strengthen and increase muscle tone in women, improve bone health and reduce the risk of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis; Mark Schoon, Senior Director for Wellness & Aquatics at the YMCA, who teaches EnhanceFitness, which is an evidence-based wellness program developed for older adults by experts that focuses on strength, flexibility, balance and cardio endurance; and Susan Sassaman, who teaches a variety of free weekly exercise classes for older adults at any fitness level called Graceful Aging affiliated with Healthy Acadia. The program begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Jesup with the panel discussion, and continues at the YWCA with a free session of EnhanceFitness.
For more information on any of these programs, contact Doreen Willett at Island Connections at 207-288-4457 or Melinda Rice at the Jesup Memorial Library at 207-288-4245.

Silent Film: The General w/ TEMPO

Event Dates and Times

1/20/2018 - Starts: 7:00 PM
The Grand 165 Main St. Ellsworth, ME 04605
On Friday, January 20th at 7 pm, TEMPO (The Eastern Maine Pops Orchestra for Young Musicians) brings back to The Grand their all-new original score that they play in synch with a hi-def, restored silent comedy classic projected on the Coastal Eye Care Screen! In “The General”, Buster Keaton plays Johnny Gray, a Southern railroad engineer who loves his train engine, (nicknamed “The General”) almost as much as he loves Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack). When the opening shots of the Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter, Johnny tries to enlist- and he is deemed too useful as an engineer to be a soldier. All Johnny knows is that he's been rejected, and Annabelle, thinking him a coward, turns her back on him. When Northern spies steal the General (and, unwittingly, Annabelle), the story switches from drama and romance to adventure mixed with Keaton's trademark deadpan humor as he uses every means possible to catch up to the General, thwart the Yankees, and rescue his darling Annabelle- for starters. Local all-age orchestra TEMPO, conducted by Rebecca Edmondson and Ethan Edmondson, encores an original score composed by Rebecca especially for The Grand’s screening of the film. (1927. US 1 hr, 19 min. Directed by Buster Keaton. G.) Tickets for this General Admission presentation are $15 for Adults and $10 for Students (15 & under.) For more information on this or other Grand events, please call the box office at 207-667-9500 or visit The Grand website at or follow us on Facebook.
