WATERVILLE, Maine (WABI) If you've been looking to adopt a pet - this weekend is the time for you.

Clear the Shelters Day is taking part Saturday and Sunday at the Waterville Humane Society.

Anyone wanting to adopt will get a reduced price or have their adoption fees waived.

The Waterville shelter is just one of seven across the state taking part in the nationwide event.

"Our hope is that they will have a very long term, loving home, loving family, and the right placement," said Lisa Smith, Director of the Humane Society Waterville Area Shelter. "If it doesn't work out, we always take our animals back with the knowledge learned from that particular home, and make, hopefully, a better choice."

Since 2015, more than 70,000 pets have been adopted because of Clear the Shelters Day
