Virginia Man Held on Bail After Deadly Crash in Bar Harbor

ELLSWORTH, Maine (WABI) A Virginia man is being held on 5-thousand dollars bail after a deadly crash in Bar Harbor Tuesday.

Police say Justin Shell was behind the wheel of the truck that hit and killed a Bar Harbor woman.

"It was just a sad day."

Terri Needham was working at her business the Chart Room on Route 3 Tuesday when she says she and the staff heard and felt something hit the building.

It was a car driven by 36 year old Justin Shell of Virginia.

Police say he went off the road and crashed into the chart room, but also hit four cars and 76 year old Connie Birkenmeier of Bar Harbor who was standing in the parking lot, she was killed.

"I'm just so sorry for Connie's family. It almost hit my husband."

"I just stopped him to let him know the price of lobsters had gone down as his luck would have it and it all happened so quick he was protected by my truck."

Shell was treated for injures at the hospital and arrested when he was released.

Shell told police he was tired and should have taken a nap because he had been traveling and driving with few stops from Virginia for the last few days.

His lawyer saying the accident was a result of a seizure.

Medical records and other statements will be brought in as evidence as this case is further investigated which could change the outcome of the manslaughter charges and up to forty years behind bars shell is facing.

Birkenmeier was a beloved member of the bar harbor community and a long time employee of Jackson Laboratory which said in a release Wednesday...

"The Jackson Laboratory community mourns the tragic loss of our dear friend and colleague, Connie was optimistic, kind, and caring, and a truly cherished member of our team. our thoughts are with her family and many close friends.'

"It's just a sad day for Bar Harbor. A sad time for all of us."
