Challenger Learning Center: Floating and Density

By  |

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Today's Challenger Learning Center Science Experiment is all about density.

For this experiment we are learning to make an egg float in water. You will need the following materials:

Raw egg
Water
Salt
Large clear drinking glass
Spoon

Directions:

Fill the glass halfway with water. Place the egg in the water (it should sink). Next, gradually stir in 1-2 cups of salt until it dissolves. Once the egg floats, stop adding salt. After the salt is added and the egg is floating, slowly pour freshwater into the glass until it is nearly full. The egg should float in the middle of the glass between the fresh water and the salt water.
