SWANVILLE, Maine (WABI) - A man from Swanville who stole hundreds of letters and packages from mailboxes last December has been sentenced.
20-year-old Randy Elwell was charged with 34 counts of theft and four counts of burglary.
He pleaded guilty last week to 10 of the charges.
Elwell was given a deferred sentence.
If he stays out of trouble for the next year-and-a-half, he can plead guilty to lesser charges and two dozen current ones will be dropped.
He'll also have to pay more than $3,100 in restitution.
Police say Elwell and a juvenile were spotted in a car, looking through mailboxes early Christmas morning.
The car was filled with letters and packages.
They belonged to a number of people in Belfast, Swanville, Searsport and Union.
Elwell was also ordered to take part in the Restorative Justice program, where he'll meet many of his victims and take part in community service.
