WASHINGTON, D.C. (WABI) Senator Susan Collins and 11 of her colleagues have brought forward legislation that would allow 100,000 public schools to improve school safety by using federal dollars.

The money would provide funding for more school counselors, a boost in school infrastructure, as well as crisis intervention and mental health training.

Collins says, "It is imperative that we take action to ensure that schools are a safe learning environment."

The School Safety and Mental Health Services Improvement Act also aims to create a presidential task force to increase interagency communication.
