ORONO, Maine (WABI) - The American Red Cross is asking families to use caution this holiday season.
They say 47 thousand fires occur during winter holidays and account for more than 500 deaths.
Members of the Orono Fire department also remind everyone to keep Christmas trees watered and use caution when using candles.
Another tip is to always pay attention when making your holiday meals.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are one of the busiest times throughout the country for kitchen fires,” said Captain Scott Luciano of the Orono Fire Department. “So when you are cooking, make sure that you're using safe practices and supervising the whole time.
Pet owners are also encouraged to make sure animals cannot bump or tip over any flammable decorations.
