PROSPECT HARBOR, Maine (WABI) On their last day of school before Veterans Day, students and staff at Peninsula School in Prospect Harbor welcomed some special guests.
Maine Veterans were the honored as part of Take a Veteran to School Day.
Teacher Sarah Norwood says, "We invite local area veterans to come in and share their stories of time in service. We like them to bring in pictures, artifacts, things they can share with the kids to give the kids a sense of what it's like to serve in our military."
Veterans were honored at a school assembly where students read prepared speeches.
The students later broke out into groups meeting with each veteran to hear about their experience one-on-one.
Veteran Howard Samiya says, "It's amazing to be able to share with kids what the military does and how it affects folks and their families. To see the light in their eyes and to see that they are genuinely interested in what you have to say and they seem to really care and appreciate it."
WABI's Chief Photographer Mark Rediker was among those honored.
Norwood says, "It's important that our kids recognize and honor what our veterans have done and realize that could be a potential career path for them as well."
