National Transportation Safety Board to Meet in December to Determine Cause of El Faro Cargo Ship Sinking

Maine, (WABI) The National Transportation Safety Board plans to meet on December 12th in Washington to determine the probable cause of the October 2015 sinking of the cargo ship El Faro.

The vessel sank during Hurricane Joaquin while sailing from Florida to Puerto Rico.

All 33 crew members aboard died, including five Maine Maritime Academy graduates.

In addition to determining the probable cause of the sinking and any factors that may have contributed to the accident, the board is expected to vote on recommendations to address safety issues uncovered during the investigation.
