BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A Bangor middle school student will compete in a national championship.
Iann Leigh, who attends James F. Doughty School, earned his spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
He won Saturday's competition at the Penobscot County Spelling Bee.
Leigh said he's prepared, but the national competition is a little different.
Iann Leigh, a competitor said, "You can't really study the specific words like you can for the other ones, and the national titles have to do a lot more with skill than just memorization. A lot of it is knowing word roots and the different languages."
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held at the end of May.
