Literacy Tea in Bangor Celebrates Reading, Supports Literacy Programs

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - It's a tea party with a purpose.

Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is hosting its 6th annual Literacy Tea later this month.

The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the organization, which helps adults with their reading and writing skills.

Besides tea and snacks, guests sit at one of three dozen tables that highlight popular children's books.

Mary Lyon says, "If you enjoyed reading as a child, these are some of the books that you're going to come back to and say 'Oh, I remember when I read this and how much fun I had,' and so, children come to it and enjoy themselves, they bring their grandparents and they enjoy themselves and it's really a celebration for all ages."

This year's tea also features award-winning Maine author Melissa Sweet.

She'll share her book "Some Writer! The Story of E.B. White".

The tea is set for Sunday, March 25th from 3 - 5 p.m.

It's at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor.

Tickets can only be purchased ahead of time.
