LEWISTON, Maine (WMTW) A 13-year-old Lewiston Middle School student died Tuesday while on a field trip with his classmates at Range Pond State Park in Poland, according to Superintendent Bill Webster.

School officials reported that seventh-grader Rayan Issa of Lewiston was playing football with several classmates at about noon when he went underwater and did not resurface.

The boy's friends notified staff and the lifeguard, according to Webster.

Because of murky water conditions, the boy was not located for nearly 20 minutes.

Webster said the boy later died at a Lewiston hospital.

Webster said students and staff are devastated by the boy's death.

Counselors were brought to the middle school to help comfort students and staff. Webster said the counselors will also be at the school Wednesday.

Webster said this is the third Lewiston Middle School student to die tragically since November 2016.

Auburn police said another Lewiston Middle School student passed out on the bus in Auburn as it returned from the field trip to Range Pond.

Police said staff initially believed the girl went into cardiac arrest and began CPR.

Paramedics responded and took the girl to the hospital.

Police said she was conscious and alert when put into the ambulance.
