Lewiston, Maine (WMTW) The City of Lewiston is the latest community considering an ordinance to keep registered sex offenders way from kids.

The proposal went before the city council Tuesday night.

It would prohibit registered sex offenders from living within 750 feet of a school or playground.

Police hope it provides an extra level of protection.

"I think its important to have regulations and to protect the citizens and the children in the community, so we're certainly in favor of that." Says Lt. St. Pierre of the Lewiston Police Department.

"I think its common sense. I think kids fall for things and they need us to watch over them." Says one parent.

No action was taken during Tuesday night's meeting.
