Kennebec County inmate sentenced for severely beating cellmate

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - A Kennebec County inmate who severely beat his cellmate will spend the next 10 years in prison.

21-year-old Elijah Ashley was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to aggravated assault.

A charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon was dropped, which is what landed him in jail in the first place.

Authorities say in November, Ashley beat 48-year-old Paul Gagnon of Augusta.

Gagnon was in jail for back child support.

After the attack, he was taken to a hospital with a brain injury.

Ashley claimed Gagnon smashed his own head on the floor, but a detective says the knuckles on Ashley's right hand were swollen.
