BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Some local groups are offering to help you file for free.
Alyssa Thurlow reports.
Tax season is here, whether we like it or not.
"We do a lot of advertising and we get a whole lot of tax preparers ready, and we try to do as many as we possibly can in one day," explains Daniel Hinman of United Way of Eastern Maine.
And this weekend, United Way of Eastern Maine is offering free services to help folks make the process go smoothly.
"Supers Saturdays are used across the country as one big push to help low to moderate income individuals with their taxes," said Hinman.
This year, they will be set up at their new location at the University of Maine at Augusta campus in Bangor.
IRS certified tax preparers will be on hand, and they expect to file more than 150 tax returns in one day alone.
"This tax return is often the largest check a family will see in a given year," said Hinman. "To know that you are going to get it done accurately, so there are no surprises down the road, and for free is huge. "Going other places costs a lot of money or can cost a lot of money, and if you have complicated taxes, sometimes it is worth it, but this is a great opportunity to make sure you keep all of that money you've earned."
The United Way isn't the only place to find help.
Accounting students at Husson University are also providing free tax prep to students as well as the public.
"Our students teach taxpayers how to do it, so the hope is that they would do it themselves in the future," explains Director of Accounting at Husson University, Dewey Martin.
Dewey Martin is the Director at the School of Accounting at Husson University. He says there are some simple things that people can do to help navigate the process.
"The key to doing a good tax return is documentation," said Martin. "I encourage people to put together a manila folder at the beginning of the year and put anything in that folder all year long that may affect your tax preparation."
Students will be available until April 17th for anyone with an income of under $64,000.
"You know that income bracket those people may not even have a computer with having limits on income, so they can still do it other places, but this is by far the easiest, and you get knowledgeable students to help them," said Martin.
The Super Saturday free tax prep event will take place Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Maine at Augusta in Bangor campus, 124 Eastport Hall.
