BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - More people are applying for emergency heating assistance than ever before.
That's according to officials at Penquis, who say that in December they ran 100 thousand dollars over their usual budget.
There is still money available for people locally, but there are things to keep in mind...
"You have to make an appointment at any of the CAP agencies," said Jennifer Giosia from Penquis. "Fill out an application, we take them through April 30th. It does take about six weeks to process a fuel assistance application. People need to be prepared that it's going to take awhile for the fuel assistance to go through and then you have to try to budget if possible to put some money aside because this is never intended to pay for your whole fuel for the winter."
We're told the average assistance is 880 dollars.
