AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) Most Mainers will see increases in their electricity bills beginning January 1st.

For residential and small business customers in Emera Maine's Bangor Hydro district that receive the standard offer, the average bill will go up about 5% each month.

Residential and small business customers for Central Maine Power will see an average rate hike of about 8%.

Medium sized businesses for both utilities will see an average increase of about 21%.

According to the Public Utilities Commission, the rate hikes are due to competition in the market and are not related to last week's storm.
