DEXTER, Maine (WABI) Dexter Police have released more details about how a man managed to steal one of their cruisers last Friday.

Police say they went to a Garland Road home to assist with the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Tibbetts who was wanted for a parole violation.

They say Tibbetts was handcuffed behind his back and put into the backseat of the cruiser.

Officers say while they were talking with Tibbett's girlfriend, Tibbetts moved the handcuffs to the front of his body and squeezed headfirst through the 11 inch square opening between the front and rear seats.

Police say Tibbetts then drove off, later abandoning the cruiser on the Parkman Road in Garland.

Police say Tibbetts stole another vehicle which they spotted later in the day...they say he led them on a high speed chase that ended when Tibbetts lost control and crashed on Route 15 in Dover-Foxcroft.

Tibbetts was seriously injured and flown to a Bangor hospital...his condition is unknown.
