DAMARISCOTTA, Maine (WMTW) An annual tradition continued in the Midcoast, Sunday.
The Pumpkin boat races at the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta.
It started as an idea among several friends, and has grown into an event that attracts thousands.
The event started on Saturday with the Big Pumpkin Drop and a Pumpkin Slingshot.
Founder Bill Clark took an interest in pumpkins for his kids and says he was hooked.
"Met some people. Talked to some people. Learned some things. Got some real seed. Grew a 906-pounder and once you grow one like that you want more. You want to go bigger. You want to try to compete and be one of the biggest ones." Says Clark.
The Pumpkinfest Regatta is today and features people piloting giant pumpkins that have been transformed into watercraft.
There are separate "paddleboat" and "powerboat" categories.
