Central Maine Families Ring in New Year with New Babies

WATERVILLE, Maine (WABI) - For some families, 2018 began in the hospital, ringing in the new year with new babies.

In Central Maine, two moms welcomed a boy and a girl just hours apart.

The proud parents were gracious enough to let cameras into their rooms Monday.

The first baby of 2018 was born in Queens, New York and then just a few hours later, a Maine couple followed suit.

"Joy, happiness, complete."

Keira Washburn and Trenton Salley of Augusta welcomed a baby boy at 4:02 Monday morning at Maine General Medical Center.

"I was sleeping at 12 and then I woke up and was like, all right, let's go."

"Yesterday was my dad and step-mom's anniversary. Tomorrow is his dad's birthday. So there was a lot we were about to hit, so it was one of the three."

At Inland Hospital in Waterville, Holly and Damien Kelley of Madison welcomed a baby girl at 7:49 am.

"I didn't think she was going to be on New Year's, I thought she was going to come yesterday. But I'm glad she held off."

But having a baby on New Year's Day wasn't the only surprise for the Kelley family.

"We adopted a little boy. He's actually nine months old. So we got pregnant when we found out we adopted him."

"Another child to spoil."

A new year and a new addition to this Central Maine family.

"Definitely brings light and joy to our family."

We believe the first baby born in Maine was in Portland.

Maine Medical Center confirmed a couple named Jason and Anya had a baby boy at 3:30 Monday morning. Congratulations!
