Augusta Food Bank Opens New Facility on Mount Vernon Avenue

The Augusta Food Bank opened the doors to its new facility on Mount Vernon Avenue on Monday.
Serving more than 400 families a month, operations are expected to be more efficient than ever.
"We keep coming back for the people."
Patrick and Rita Fortin will be celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary next month.
"We believe in service and this is how we serve the community," said Rita.
January also marks nine years of volunteering at the Augusta Food Bank for the couple. They say it's been quite the journey watching businesses and community members rally in support of this new facility.
"This is beautiful. It's going to be very convenient and I think it's going to be good for all."
"The food bank was housed in the St. Mark's Episcopal Church's parish hall for 36 years. Right from the beginning, it's always been there. This is the first time it's ever been in a different location," said Susan Williams, pantry manager.
Now a one-stop shop for families and individuals in need, the new building has its own kitchen and transfer facility.
"Our goal here was to make it more efficient, not only for our volunteers but also for our customers. They're able to make an appointment now so they don't have to wait outside in the weather," said Williams.
"This place is magnificent. It's really been godsent I guess," said Patrick.
"Yes, it is godsent," agreed Rita.
The entire package distribution process has been streamlined and improved as well as the manner in which customers' confidentiality is handled.
"We have an intake office now so that when they get checked into the computer on their account, they can share their information that they need to share for their visit," said Williams.
Now with slightly expanded hours and a large parking area that didn't exist at the former location, customers and volunteers will be reaping the benefits of an entirely community-funded charitable operation.
"We've been blessed big time, having all this food week after week, year after year," said Patrick.
"People are very generous," replied Rita.
