Athens Woman Ordered to Repay $56k in Fraudulent VA Disability Benefits

ATHENS, Maine (WABI) A woman from Athens who conspired with her father-in-law to defraud the VA out of disability benefits has been ordered to repay more than $56,000.

26-year-old Lisa-Marie Watson was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Bangor after pleading guilty in January.

She also has to serve five years of probation.

Court documents say 66-year-old David Watson, Senior, submitted documents to the VA on behalf of Lisa-Marie Watson.

The documents falsely claimed she'd suffered from mental disabilities connected to her Army service.

David Watson was sentenced in July to 16 months in prison.

He also has to help repay $48,000 of the fraudulent benefits.
