AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - State officials say about 1,500 calls were received during 2017 from Mainers who reported cases of potential welfare fraud.

771 of those were found to be legitimate and are being reviewed by authorities for potential investigation.

They say some were referred to other agencies as the reports involved drug trafficking or child abuse.

Investigators presented 62 cases to the Attorney General's Office for potential prosecution, with an additional 37 cases filed with local district attorney's offices.
